How many regions fit in three weeks

Three, usually. Four if you're careful. Here is the arithmetic.

Australia is roughly the size of the contiguous United States. Sydney to Perth is a longer flight than London to Moscow. Most first itineraries we're sent try to cover the country like a list, and spend a third of the trip in airports.

Every move between regions costs most of a day: check out, the transfer, the security queue, the flight, the transfer at the other end, and a slow first evening. Count each one as a travel day.

So our rule is simple. Give each region at least three nights, ideally four, and count the travel days honestly. Twenty-one nights gives you four regions with three travel days, or three regions with room to breathe. Fourteen nights gives you three regions, or two done properly.

The planner on this site does the same sums. Choose your month and your nights, pick regions, and it tells you how many days you'll spend getting between them.
